Antibacterial activity of the anterior and posterior midgut of Rhodnius prolixus 7 days after feeding . A – Activity of anterior (contents and wall) and posterior midgut samples against E. coli. B – Activity of anterior (contents and wall) and posterior midgut samples against S. aureus. Antibacterial activity measured by turbidometric assay (TB) (OD550 nm) with readings from 0 to 19 hour in plate assay. Treatments: bacteria incubated with anterior midgut contents; ■ bacteria incubated with anterior midgut wall; ♦ bacteria incubated with posterior midgut. Values represent the means ± SD of 9 pools using 3 insects each (n = 27) in triplicate wells. Asterisks relates to significant differences (***p < 0.001) obtained by a two way ANOVA.
