Barcoding and phylogenetic relationships of fish trypanosomes. Phylogenetic analysis inferred by maximum parsimony based on V7V8 SSU rRNA sequences (barcodes) of fish trypanosomes from Brazilian armoured catfish (Loricariidae), or from leeches taken from these fishes. Note the inclusion of a new species, Trypanosoma abeli n. sp. established in culture. Freshwater and marine fish trypanosomes from different continents were included in the analysis, as well as other trypanosome species of the Aquatic clade. Numbers at nodes are bootstrap values derived from 100 replicates. GenBank accession numbers of SSU rRNA sequences determined in this study are listed in Table 1. Codes in parenthesis are GenBank accession numbers available for previously described species
