Accumulation kinetics showing the concentration of a toxic substance in tissues of infected and uninfected hosts. At the steady state concentration, the uptake and elimination rates of the substance are balanced. The accumulation of toxic substances is associated with the physiological response of the exposed organism, i.e. at lower tissue concentrations physiological responses allow for a complete compensation of adverse effects. Thus, if the level of the steady state concentration is reduced due to parasitism, less severe toxic effects can be expected for the host compared to uninfected conspecifics
