Colored circles show the location of TBE cases reported from 2004 through 2013 and the colored hexagons show the location of the OWH TBEV isolates (hexagons). Note, that isolate OK A4N5 (grey hexagon) and isolates RNK C4A5N8/9 (blue hexagon) are spatially located close to a cluster of frequent and severe to fatal TBE cases, whereas in the proximity of the isolate KB D1A2M7 (dark blue hexagon) no cases have been reported, although the area of isolation is located very close (< 1 km) to a densely populated region at the eastern border of the Rhine plain
