Phylogenetic tree based on maximum likelihood analysis of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences obtained from specimens of I. ricinus (consensus sequence of this study is highlighted with a circle) collected in southern Italy and sequences from specimens of I. inopinatus KM211789 (I. inopinatus, Tunisia), KM211790 (I. inopinatus, Spain). Other sequences included of I. ricinus from Europe and northern Africa are available on GenBank. Ixodes affinis (U95879), Ixodes ventalloi (KU178963), Ixodes hexagonus (KY319189), and Ixodes trianguliceps (DQ201845 and KY319190) were used as outgroups
